The Department of Natural Resources has closed the following areas in Cook County to protect spawning walleye. The closures in Minnesota-Ontario waters are made in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and affect both sides of the border.

Harvey Americus Aluni, age 89, a long-time resident of Virginia, died Thursday, April 24, 2008 in his home. He was born July 12, 1918 in Virginia, the son of Sam and Josephine Aluni, and was a graduate of Virginia High School and Virginia Junior College. Harvey married Shirley Carlson on May 30, 1942, in Virginia and was a U.S. Army Veteran.
Retired Lt. Col. Lindor Anker Jacobsen, born April 18, 1921, in Hovland. died April 16, 2008, in Medford, Ore.
On April 7, I attended a 5 p.m. meeting of the Cook County Fair Board, which was held at the Community Center. A unanimous vote was made to cancel the Cook County Fair for this year.
In March the American Cancer Society held its annual Daffodil Campaign in Minnesota. The last of the money raised is in and this year’s campaign in northeastern Minnesota has raised $66,717.36.
According to the study conducted for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by several engineering firms, the Lutsen Mountain Corporation ski hill complex (LMC) is the largest contributor of sediment that causes turbidity in the Lower Poplar River.

The 7th and 8th Grade Band received a perfect score — 40 — when they participated in a Middle School Band competition in Ely recently. The students played outstandingly, said Bill Tormondsen, band director. The judges were highly complimentary about the band as well. The Spring Band concert is May 21. Don’t miss it.

Philip Klobuchar was named Valedictorian and Benjamin Nelson was named Salutatorian of the Class of 2008 in a special ceremony at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts on Sunday. The honor graduates were also announced. All were given their Honor cords.
The Math Masters Team, composed of fifth graders, has been training since October to compete in the MathMasters Competition in Duluth. On May 2, they joined 29 other area schools, and battled tricky math problems for four hours. Notable performances: Lars Scannell scored ninth overall, and Team 2 took home fourth place medals. Bravo for the hard-working Mathletes.
The Sawtooth Mountain Elementary School fourth and fifth grade students will present a recorder concert on Friday, May 9, at 2:15 p.m. in the Community Ed gymnasium.
The Sawtooth Mountain Elementary School second- and third-grade students will present their spring music program on Friday, May 23, at 2:15 p.m. in the Community Education gymnasium.
Students around the county are engaged in a variety of educational activites.
